This program is sponsored by the Maine Library Association and the Maine Reading Association for students in grades 4 and 5.
The morning message is designed to encourage a sense of cohesiveness and community among all students. Morning message gives us the opportunity to communicate important information to students and recite the pledge, which is led by a student. It's a great way to begin the day!
Since Nathan Clifford tends to have a fairly transient population (Family Shelter and the Family Crisis Shelter both being in our district) a new student orientation program "Clifford Pals" is in the process of being implemented. This program is designed to welcome new students by matching them with a "buddy", a fellow student who can give them a tour, answer questions, etc. The new student will receive a welcome packet complete with a coupon to use at the school store.

This is a mentoring program for literacy with primary and intermediate students paired. Nathan Clifford offers Reading Recovery, a short-term intervention program for first graders. Students are selected for the program based on their scores on the Observation Survey, an assessment which is administered either before school begins or during the first week of school in the fall. The Reading Recovery teacher implements a different and individualized program for each child, and meets daily with each child for a thirty minute lesson. As a child develops the efficient and independent processing skills necessary to reading, he/she is discontinued from the program, and is able to benefit successfully from the reading instruction going on in the classroom. |

The Clifford Student Assistance Team is a group of school professionals who identify students at risk, brainstorm solutions regarding students who are at risk and initiate interventions on their behalf. The team receives referrals and develops interventions to help students experience greater success in the school setting. The team also serves as a resource for teachers, parents, and administrators in addressing the needs of high-risk students. In addition, the team functions as a potential pre-referral system to the Special Education process.
Nathan Clifford has implemented this program school wide this year. This program is designed to teach students positive ways to deal with conflict and emotionally charged situations.
This is a seven week program that focuses on health and is offered by interns from Maine Medical Center. This program is for fifth grade students.
This occasion highlights student accomplishments around the State of Maine and Portland Learning Results.
Grades K-5 culmination of student work throughout the year.
This annual event recognizes the achievements of Grade 5 students entering Middle school.
Evening events presented by the vocal music teachers.
This is a month long event with emphasis on literacy that is coordinated by the Reading Consultant.
Realizing not all students are successful at managing unstructured time, Nathan Clifford has implemented an alternative recess program. Teachers volunteer their lunchtime to supervise activities such as arts/crafts, game day, movement day, chorus, study hall, etc. This not only provides students with an alternative to a possibly negative situation, it can capitalize on their strengths and encourage the development of new skills.
The store is opened one day a week, Wednesday, and is operated by the fifth grade students.
