PROCLAMATION

RECOGNIZING NATHAN CLIFFORD SCHOOL
1907-2007

WHEREAS: Nathan Clifford School was opened in 1907 with an enrollment
of 200 students that first year, and was considered the premier
grammar school in the State of Maine; and

WHEREAS: Nathan Clifford School, whose history is a proud one, was
named after the honorable Supreme Court Justice, Nathan Clifford
(1803-1881) whose distinguished accomplishments included: serving in
the State of Maine Legislature, as a State of Maine Attorney General,
as a United States Senator and in the United States Congress; and

WHEREAS: In 1989, Nathan Clifford School was designated a Portland
Landmark due to the renown of its architect John Calvin Stevens and
its stately architecture; and

WHEREAS: Nathan Clifford School was also nationally recognized in
2003-2004 by the Department of Education, Washington, D.C., for
sustained academic achievement with a culturally and
socio-economically diverse population; and

WHEREAS: Nathan Clifford School has provided the educational
foundation for many of Portland's current and past civic and business
leaders over its 100 year history. Although much has changed, the
importance of this school to each new generation remains the same.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, THAT I, Nicholas M. Mavodones, Jr.,
Mayor of the City of Portland, Maine, and the members of the Portland
City Council do hereby congratulate the Nathan Clifford School on this
the occasion marking its 100th Anniversary and proclaim recognition
for its vital role in shaping the lives and preparing its young
students for success and confidence in all of their future endeavors.
